Vertical Enclosures: Containing Fire, Protecting Life

Overview: Vertical enclosures are a critical component of a building’s life safety and fire protection strategy. When properly designed, constructed, and maintained, protected vertical openings help limit the movement of fire, smoke, heat, and toxic products throughout a building. When these systems are compromised, however, vertical openings can rapidly become pathways for fire and smoke spread and can significantly reduce the protection provided to occupants and responding firefighters. Participants will examine requirements addressing vertical openings, exit enclosures, shafts, fire barriers, opening protectives, penetrations, joints, and continuity of fire resistance-rated assemblies. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing common deficiencies, determining the applicable code provisions, evaluating the condition of doors and other opening protectives, and documenting violations in a clear and defensible manner.
