Solid Waste Program
The Solid Waste Program ensures safe and sanitary management of solid waste in Tennessee by regulating solid waste disposal facilities, composting facilities, transfer stations, processing facilities, convenience centers, and other solid waste-related activities throughout the state. The Solid Waste Program operates under the authority of the Solid Waste Disposal Act (T.C.A. §68-211-101 et seq.).
If you are an applicant or if you live in an area where a landfill or solid waste facility is being proposed or modified, you may find information on the project in the Dataviewer or on our Public Participation Opportunities page. To search for information in the Dataviewer, select the “Permit” tab. Additional instructions for refining your search are found at the top of the Dataviewer page.

Illegal Dumping
Dumping of solid wastes without a permit is illegal under the Solid Waste Act, unless a private landowner is managing their own waste on their property. Often, illegal dumping cases go undetected unless they are reported by the public. If you see a solid waste dump, please contact your local Environmental Field Office or your local public works or codes department if you live within an urban area.
Litter and roadside dumping are addressed under the TN Litter Law and should be reported to local authorities or the Tennessee Highway Patrol- litter control program.

TDEC took over operations at the former Blaylock and Brown (EPLEX) Class III Landfill in Shelby County.
Pending and final permit documents for non-hazardous waste facilities.
TDEC's SPILS program tracks incidents where petroleum products are released along our roads.
The Waste Tire Hauler (WTH) Program requires anyone that commercially hauls waste tires to register with TDEC and comply with tracking and reporting requirements.
The solid waste regulations are viewable on the Secretary of State's website.
