Applying for TennCare
If you do not have TennCare and want to see if you can get it now, you can apply by using TennCare Connect at tenncareconnect.tn.gov. It’s a self-service portal that allows applicants and members to create an account, check their status, report changes, read letters, and more!

Do you need help applying for TennCare? There are four ways that you can get help:
- Call TennCare Connect for free at 855-259-0701 to get help over the phone.
- Go to any DHS office in any of Tennessee’s 95 counties. A trained staff person there will help you apply. Call 866-311-4287 to find a DHS office near you.
- Get help from private groups. To find someone near you, call 866-475-7879.
- If you have a disability, someone can even come to your house to help you apply for TennCare. Call your local Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD) at 866-836-6678.

Do you already have TennCare but have questions?
- Call TennCare Connect at 855-259-0701 or your health plan if you have questions about your coverage. If you have medical bills for the care you received or paid for after your coverage started, your health plan can help you. They can also help you if the medical receipts and/or bills are for the care TennCare covers. But they must get the receipts/bills within 60 days from when TennCare sent you a letter.
- You can find the name of your health plan on your TennCare card. If you need a new TennCare card, call your health plan. The contact information for each health plan is on the Managed Care Organizations webpage.
- Do you have TennCare now, and your coverage did not start when you first applied? Call TennCare Connect at 855-259-0701. Tell them you want to file a Start Date Appeal. Or go to the How to File an Eligibility Appeal webpage.
Have you applied for TennCare and have questions?
Call TennCare Connect at 855-259-0701. If you applied for TennCare and still have not heard from them, tell them you want to file a delayed application appeal.
Do you need help with your Renewal Packet?
If you need help with your Renewal Packet, call TennCare Connect at 855-259-0701. Or go to the Renewal Packet Instructions webpage to help guide you.
Each year, we must see if you qualify for coverage. We will send you a letter with your Renewal Packet in the mail. Answer all the questions that you can and send us the proof we ask for in the Renewal Packet.
- We will use your answers to see if you can keep your coverage, but the kind of coverage you have may change.
- Be sure to send the proof we ask for with the Renewal Packet; this can help us make a faster decision on your coverage.
- We look at things like your age, household income, how many people live with you, and if you have other insurance.

Do you need help with Medicare costs? You can apply for the Medicare Savings Program, like QMB or SLMB. This may help your Medicare premiums and cost-sharing.
You can apply online, over the phone, or with a paper application.
For help applying, call the Tennessee State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) at 1-877-801-0044.
Do you need help with Long-Term Care? If you have TennCare, you can call your TennCare health plan (MCO). The number is on your TennCare card.
If you do not have TennCare, contact your local Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD) for free at 1-866-836-6678. Even if you do not qualify for Medicaid, they can tell you about other programs that may help. If you have a disability, they will even come to your house to help you apply for TennCare. Or you can call TennCare Connect at 855-259-0701 for help over the phone.
If you have an intellectual disability or are helping someone with an intellectual disability apply for long-term care, call the Department of Disability and Aging (DDA) for free at 1-800-535-9725.

Call TennCare Connect at 855-259-0701. Some people applied at healthcare.gov and still did not get a decision. If you waited for a decision for more than 45 days (or more than 90 days if you applied for CHOICES), you can ask for a Delay Hearing by calling TennCare Connect.

You may be able to enroll your baby right now. TennCare and CoverKids have made it easy to enroll newborns over the phone:
- If you are already on TennCare or CoverKids, call TennCare Connect for free at 855-259-0701 when you have your baby.
- If you do not have TennCare or CoverKids, you can apply for your baby over the phone by calling TennCare Connect for free at 855-259-0701.
Tell us about changes to your address, family size, or job. State law says you must tell us about changes that may affect your coverage. You must report these changes within ten (10) days of the change. Call us right away if:
- You move
- You change jobs
- Your family size changes
- Your income changes
- You get or can get group health insurance
You may also need to give us proof we need to make the change.
There are three (3) ways to report a change. You only have to pick one:
- Call TennCare Connect at 855-259-0701.
- Use your online account at tenncareconnect.tn.gov. With TennCare Connect, you can view your case information, update your records, renew your coverage when it’s time, and view your letters. Haven’t created an online account yet? Go to tenncareconnect.tn.gov and click on the Get Started button. After you create an account and have logged in, select Link My Case. You’ll need to enter your Social Security Number (SSN) to link your case to your TennCare Connect account. Or you can enter your Person ID.
- Use the TennCare Connect mobile app. Using the app, you can take a photo of the file(s) we need and send it to us right away from your phone! With TennCare Connect, you can also view your case information, update your records, and view your letters. Haven’t downloaded it yet? Go to the App Store or Google Play Store and look for TennCare Connect. After installing the app, create an account by clicking on the Get Started button. You’ll need to enter your Social Security Number (SSN) to link your case to your TennCare Connect account. Or you can enter your Person ID.
Sending us Information
After you report a change, TennCare may ask you for proof of more information. Don’t send the original. Send a copy. When you send us your copy:
- Send the “How to Report Changes or Send Information to TennCare” page that came with your letter from TennCare. It has a barcode that will help us know when you have sent something to us. (If you do not have this page, you must write your name and Date of Birth on every page you send us.)
- AND write your name, Date of Birth, and your (case, application, or appeal) number on each additional page you send us.
There are several ways to get this to us. You only have to pick one:
- Use your online account at tenncareconnect.tn.gov
- Use the TennCare Connect mobile app.
- Fax it to: 855-315-0669. Be sure to keep the page that says your fax went through.
- Mail it to: TennCare Connect

If so, you must tell the Social Security Administration about your changes too! Do you need the phone number to your local SSA office? To find your local SSA office, go to the Social Security Office Locator web page.

You must renew your TennCare every year. When it is time for you to renew, you will get a letter from TennCare that tells you how. For more information on Renewals, go to the Renewals web page.
- The 1095-B is an IRS tax document. You can use it as proof you had qualifying health care coverage (also called minimum essential coverage). Do you need a 1095-B for you or someone else in your household? Tell us. You can ask us to send you one for each person in your household who had coverage with us last tax year.

Do you want to request a termination of your TennCare or CoverKids coverage? There are 3 ways you can request a termination:
- Call TennCare Connect for free at 855-259-0701.
- Fax your termination request to TennCare Connect at 855-315-0669. Be sure to keep the page that says your fax went through.
- Mail your termination request to:

You must include the Full Name, Date of Birth, Social Security Number or Case Number, and the current mailing address of all individuals who want to end their coverage.
The termination request must be dated and signed with each signature.
