Knob Creek Road

Washington County

The Tennessee Department of Transportation, in partnership with the City of Johnson City, plans to construct improvements to Knob Creek Road from Mizpah Hills Drive to Marketplace Boulevard. The proposed improvements include widening the existing roadway to five lanes (two travel lanes in each direction and one continuous turn lane) and replacing an existing one-way railroad underpass with a new overpass. Part of Knob Creek Road will be shifted to new alignment to accommodate the new overpass. Upon completion of this and additional planned projects along the corridor, TDOT plans to designate this route as a state route.

Current Status: Right-of-way acquisition is currently underway.

Estimated construction start: This project is scheduled in TDOT’s 10-Year Project Plan to begin construction in Fiscal Year 2027.

Estimated completion*: TBD

Funding Type: This project is funded through the Statewide Partnership Program. The City of Johnson City is providing a portion of the project’s funding, with the remainder funded through the Transportation Modernization Fund.

History and Background

In 2023, the city of Johnson City submitted this project to TDOT as a potential Statewide Partnership Program project, whereby Johnson City would contribute local funding to accelerate a project on TDOT’s system. TDOT review indicated that this project was a strong candidate, and the project is identified for funding in TDOT’s current 10-Year Project Plan.

Two projects within the corridor will be completed by Johnson City: West Oakland Road between Hanover Road and West Mountainview Road and Mountainview Road between and West Oakland Road and Knob Creek Road. These projects will be completed prior to construction of this project. A fourth project, which will complete the corridor, will connect the improved Knob Creek Road to Boones Creek Road (SR 354). That project has not yet been identified for funding.
