Sign Policy, Design, and Programs Section

We manage statewide sign programs and support the State Traffic Engineer. We ensure signs follow policies, rules, and regulations. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is the national standard for traffic control devices on roads open to public travel. Tennessee uses the 11th Edition of the MUTCD. This section designs signs and reviews and approves sign plans from other Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) offices.

What We Do

Oversee statewide sign programs and compliance with policies, rules, and regulations.
Apply the MUTCD (2009 Edition) as the standard for traffic control devices.
Design signs and review/approve sign plans produced by TDOT offices.
