Interstate 40 French Broad River Bridge

Due to the age of the structure, the bridge over the river (Douglas Lake) is to be replaced. The new structure will allow safe passage of traffic along Interstate 40 corridor. The right of way impacts have been minimized by staying within existing state-owned property to a great degree, with the exception of the impact of property acquisition on the east side of the bridge where the shift of the alignment has affected property owners.

Current Status

Oct. 1, 2025: Nearing final design of the bridge and moving forward with a conjoined effort with a builder and designer to provide constructability reviews.

Estimated construction start: June 30, 2026

Estimated Completion Date: September 2029
