Summer Food Service Program Monitoring Overview
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) intended to ensure that children who benefit from free and reduced price meals during the school year have access to nutritious meals during the summer. The program is administered by the Tennessee Department of Human Services in partnership with sponsors, feeding sites and volunteers.
Monitoring Purpose
The DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) is responsible for addressing the occurrence of fraud, waste, and abuse with the various programs that DHS administers, including SFSP. OIG conducts monitoring reviews of food program sponsors and feeding sites as a part of program integrity and compliance with Federal and State regulations.
Review Criteria
All agencies are not required to be reviewed annually. DHS follows the review guidelines stipulated by the USDA and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). DHS oversight includes monitoring at least 33.3% of sponsors each year in the food programs. This is in addition to the number of sponsors that the Comptroller’s Office reviews and the USDA.
