Leighton’s Story

Leighton’s Success Story
Leighton Goldston, Employment and Community First CHOICES (ECF CHOICES) Member

When Leighton joined the Employment and Community First (ECF) CHOICES program in November 2023, he had one clear goal: to find a job. Before stepping into the workforce, however, Leighton wanted to build his skills and confidence. His journey began with support from ECF CHOICES services designed to help individuals prepare for competitive, integrated employment.

Leighton embraced opportunities to learn and grow. Integrated Employment Path Services provided real-world experience, workplace skill development, and confidence-building through community-based activities. He began volunteering at organizations such as Goodwill, Hammer & Stain, and the Wilson County Community Help Center. These experiences were more than just volunteer work; they were stepping stones toward independence.

As time went on, Leighton’s confidence grew. Managers and coworkers noticed his progress as his stamina improved, his accuracy sharpened, and his smile grew wider. He wasn’t just building skills. He was building connections and becoming part of a community.

“Leighton made lots of friends everywhere we went!” explained Meagan Garcia, Employment Specialist of MillarRich.

With this confidence, Leighton took the next step and began his job search. Each week, he visited five businesses, introducing himself and sharing his resume. His determination paid off when he became an employee at Wilson County Community Help Center in April 2025.

Today, Leighton is thriving in his role. He is nearly fully independent and has built relationships with his coworkers and managers. But what makes his job special is the sense of belonging. “They’re very nice to me and they make me feel like I’m their friend,” Leighton says with a smile. “[I want to work here for] a very long time.”

Leighton’s success story is a testament to the impact of the ECF CHOICES program. For Leighton, that impact means independence, confidence, and a job he loves.
