JT's Story

When JT joined the Employment and Community First (ECF) CHOICES program, he was eager to work but faced challenges with social anxiety. At the time, he was employed at a local retailer, working alone in the backroom unloading boxes and organizing stock. Though dedicated to his job, the work environment was stressful and isolating. After planning with his support team, JT decided it was time for a better fit.

That decision led JT to begin the Situational Observation and Assessment service, which provides hands-on work experience based on a job seeker’s interests and strengths. For JT, this meant visiting local businesses and exploring what motivated him. Through these visits, he enjoyed chatting with employees and guests, which led him to consider roles that involved engaging with people.

Next came an opportunity that would change everything: performing as the mascot at Chuck E. Cheese. JT was intrigued by the games, music, and lively atmosphere. With encouragement from his support team, JT applied and was hired.

From his first shift, JT exceeded expectations. Wearing the costume helped ease his anxiety, and he surprised everyone by performing a dance he had learned at home. He quickly discovered a passion for connecting with families and entertaining guests, including dancing, greeting families, and posing for photos.

JT has been employed as the Chuck E. Cheese mascot since December 2023. He now works with only periodic job coaching check-ins and continues to bring smiles to countless faces.

Thanks to the services provided through ECF CHOICES, JT has gained more than employment. “[His] new confidence has allowed for him to meet new people, find new purpose in employment, and ultimately live more independently,” shared Pam McCafferty, Job Developer of MillarRich.

JT’s journey is a powerful reminder that employment is not just about earning a paycheck, it’s about building a life.
