Statewide and Regional ITS Architectures

An Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) architecture is a high‑level plan for how ITS can address transportation needs in a state or region.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) require an ITS architecture to use federal transportation funding for ITS projects.

Developing a Regional ITS Architecture

There are three key steps:

Step 1 Identify Needs and ITS Inventory

Document stakeholder needs. List existing and planned ITS elements.

Step 2 Develop ITS Market Packages (Services)

Define the ITS services that address one or more regional needs. Describe how each service will operate and the data flows between agencies.

Step 3 Identify Sequence of ITS Projects to Deploy in the Region

Create a regional ITS deployment plan. Include the projects stakeholders recommend to implement the selected services, and show how these projects will be deployed over time.
