The TDOT ITS Design Section plans, designs, and supports Tennessee’s statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), also called TDOT SmartWay. This system uses cameras, message signs, vehicle detectors, and fiber‑optic communication to help monitor traffic in real time. It improves safety, reduces delays, and helps traffic flow more smoothly.
The ITS team also works with new transportation technologies. They help prepare the state for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) and other future systems that will improve how people travel.
Roadway Lighting Design

The TDOT Lighting Design Section provides guidance and design support for roadway and interchange lighting across the state. In Tennessee, cities, towns, and utility partners own and maintain roadway lighting. TDOT’s job is to set standards, review lighting plans, and support project teams.
They work closely with TDOT’s regional offices and local agencies to make sure lighting systems are safe, consistent, and built to meet statewide expectations.
Responsibilities
- Planning and Design of ITS Deployments
- Maintain TN Statewide ITS Architecture
- Approvals of Regional ITS Architecture
- Approval of Local System Engineering Reports
- Development of TDOT ITS Standards and Guidance
- Maintain the ITS Qualified Products List (QPL)
- Prepare the state for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV's)
- Promote the use of Emerging Transportation Technology
- Deployment of Fiber Optic Communications
- Development of TDOT ITS Standards and Guidance
- Review of Lighting Design Projects
