The TDOT ITS Design Section plans, designs, and supports Tennessee’s statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), known as TDOT SmartWay.
The system uses several tools to monitor traffic conditions and support real-time transportation management statewide:
- Cameras
- Message signs
- Vehicle detectors
- Fiber-optic communication
These tools improve safety, reduce travel delays, and help traffic move more smoothly statewide.
The ITS team also works with emerging transportation technologies to support safer and more efficient travel. The team helps prepare Tennessee for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) and other future transportation systems. These systems will improve how people travel throughout Tennessee and support the state’s future transportation needs.
Roadway Lighting Design

The TDOT Lighting Design Section provides guidance and design support for roadway and interchange lighting across the state.
In Tennessee, cities, towns, and utility partners own and maintain roadway lighting throughout the state.
TDOT’s job is to set standards, review lighting plans, and support statewide project teams.
The section works closely with TDOT regional offices and local agencies.
Together, they ensure lighting systems are safe, consistent, and built to meet statewide expectations.
Responsibilities
- Planning and Design of ITS Deployments
- Maintain TN Statewide ITS Architecture
- Approvals of Regional ITS Architecture
- Approval of Local System Engineering Reports
- Development of TDOT ITS Standards and Guidance
- Maintain the ITS Qualified Products List (QPL)
- Prepare the state for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV's)
- Promote the use of Emerging Transportation Technology
- Deployment of Fiber Optic Communications
- Development of TDOT ITS Standards and Guidance
- Review of Lighting Design Projects
