Intelligent Transportation Systems and Lighting
ITS Design
Email: TDOT.TrafficDesign.ITS@tn.gov
The TDOT ITS Design Section plans, designs, and supports Tennessee’s statewide Intelligent Transportation System, called TDOT SmartWay.
The system uses several tools to monitor traffic conditions and manage transportation activities across the state.
These tools include:
- Cameras
- Message signs
- Vehicle detectors
- Fiber-optic communication
These tools improve safety, reduce travel delays, and help traffic move more smoothly across Tennessee.
The ITS team also works with emerging technologies to support safer and more efficient travel.
The team prepares Tennessee for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) and other future transportation systems.
These systems will improve everyday travel across Tennessee and support the state’s future transportation needs.
Roadway Lighting Design
Email: TDOT.TrafficDesign.Lighting@tn.gov
The TDOT Lighting Design Section provides guidance and design support for roadway and interchange lighting statewide.
In Tennessee, cities, towns, and utility partners own and maintain roadway lighting throughout the state.
TDOT sets standards, reviews lighting plans, and supports project teams throughout the state during project development.
The section works closely with TDOT regional offices and local agencies when planning lighting projects.
Together, they ensure lighting systems are safe, consistent, and built to meet statewide expectations.
