ITS Design
Email: TDOT.TrafficDesign.ITS@tn.gov

The TDOT ITS Design section leads the planning, design, implementation, and support of Tennessee's statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), also known as TDOT SmartWay. This program includes cameras, dynamic message signs, vehicle detectors, communication networks (including fiber optic cable), and other technologies that enable real time traffic monitoring, traffic management, and improved safety. It also promotes the adoption of emerging transportation technologies and helps prepare the state for Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) deployment.

Roadway Lighting Design
Email: TDOT.TrafficDesign.Lighting@tn.gov

TDOT Lighting Design section provides statewide guidance and design support for roadway and interchange lighting. Roadway lighting in Tennessee is locally owned and maintained by municipalities or utility partners, and TDOT's role is to establish standards, review designs, and support project teams. They work with Regional TDOT offices and local agencies to ensure lighting systems are safe, consistent, and aligned with statewide design expectations.
