Johnson City ITS Architecture
Overview
The Johnson City Regional Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture and Deployment Plan provides a long-term strategy for the Region.
It explains how ITS will be deployed, integrated, and operated across the Johnson City Region.
The plan helps stakeholders define the desired future system and identify manageable projects.
These projects can be implemented over time as funding becomes available.
Purpose and Benefits
Interoperability and Resource Sharing
The plan promotes interoperability among agencies and supports regional resource sharing.
It also encourages coordinated, long-term planning across the Johnson City Region.
Federal Requirements
Federal agencies require this plan for ITS projects funded through federal transportation programs.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) require regular updates.
Geographic Scope
The updated plan uses the same boundaries as the Johnson City Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO).
These boundaries include the organization’s Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA).
Regional Vision and Horizon Year
Stakeholders developed the plan around a shared vision for regional ITS.
The vision supports ITS implementation and operations in the Johnson City Region through 2050.
Regional ITS Deployment Plan
The Architecture includes a Deployment Plan that identifies priority projects recommended by stakeholders.
These projects support the regional vision and can be delivered in phases.

The plan should be reviewed and updated regularly to remain accurate and effective.
