Monuments & Memorials Commission

Board Characteristics

Nine voting members comprise the Tennessee Monuments and Memorials Commission. Three members are appointed by the Governor, three members are appointed by the Speaker of the Senate, and three members are appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The executive director of the Tennessee Historical Commission shall serve as an ex officio non-voting member. Each appointing authority shall appoint one member from each grand division of the state. Each appointing authority shall appoint one member to a four-year term, one member to a three-year term, and one member to a two-year term. After the initial terms are served, all terms are four-year terms.

The Tennessee Monuments and Memorials Commission is established under Tennessee Code Annotated section 4-1-412 to study, hear, and resolve petitions for waiver under the Tennessee Heritage Protection Act. The statute authorizing this board expires June 30, 2029.
