Overview

The proposed project includes the widening of State Route 48 from two lanes to five lanes with a two-way left turn lane from just south of State Route 374 (101st Airborne Division Pkwy) to north of Tylertown Rd. The project also includes an innovative intersection called a Continuous-Flow Intersection at the intersection State Route 374 (101st Airborne Division Pkwy) to help with traffic flow and safety.

Design

The proposed project includes approximately 4.24 miles of roadway construction work. State Route 48 will be widened from two to five lanes, including a center turn lane, four-foot shoulders, curb and gutter, and five-foot sidewalks as well as improvements at intersections of side roads along the roadway for improved safety and ADA compliance.

There will be intersection improvements at Needmore Rd, Hazelwood Rd, Meriwether Rd, State Route 236 (Tiny Town Rd), I -24, and Tylertown Rd. The intersection of Proposed Spring Creek Pkwy will be included in the improvements of State Route 48. 

A CFI provides the benefit of moving left-turning vehicles across traffic to the left (opposite) side of the roadway ahead of the primary intersection through a separate signalized intersection, which provides for free-flow left turns at the primary intersection.

The primary intersection is, in turn, much more efficient because left-turn green times are no longer needed and the through movements can function freely (green or red). Free-flow left turns at the primary intersection reduce the number of conflict points of turning left across traffic (potential for head-on and T-bone collisions).
