Obion River WMA

Directions and Description

Directions: from Kenton, follow Highway 89 East and follow signs to Greenfield and Big Cypress State Natural Area.  Highway 89 is well-paved, has several sharp bends, and transitions to Highway 445; however, follow the signs to Big Cypress State Natural Area and you will pass the entrance to Obion River WMA on the left.  Other access points are available on Highway 445. Lat: 36.18482°N Long: -88.91656°W

The WMA is only open during daylight hours to foot traffic when gates are closed. Entrance gates will be open during hunting seasons, but may be closed without prior notice for safety and management reasons.  Maness Swamp Hunting Unit is closed to all activity beginning five (5) days before each opening of late duck season. All hunting other than waterfowl is prohibited during late duck season and may only be hunted by those possessing a special waterfowl area permit during late duck season. Hunting Season Summary webpage.

Description: Obion River WMA is located in Obion, Weakley, and Gibson Tennessee counties and is approximately 8,500 acres.  The WMA is a mixture of bottomland hardwood forest and cropland for waterfowl management.  Game species are common, including Wild Turkey, White-tailed Deer, and in winter, waterfowl. Edge species, such as Indigo Bunting, are common in summer in addition to resident birds.

Regulations & Dates

All Units

Hunters (except raccoon, opossum, and turkey hunters) may not enter WMA prior to two (2) hours before sunrise and must be off of WMA by one (1) hour after sunset or legal hunting/shooting time.  No permanent blinds. No blinds, blind materials, boats, or decoys may be left overnight.

CWD Carcass Transportation Regulations Apply

Big Game, Small Game, and Trapping are the same as statewide seasons, except as noted.

Closed to Fall Turkey Hunting.

Turkey - One (1) non-quota hunt: April 12 - May 4, 2025. The bag limit of one (1) male bearded turkey counts towards the statewide bag limit.

Turkey (Young Sportsman) - Same as statewide season.

Quail - Nov. 2, 2024 - Jan. 15, 2025.

 

Big Cypress Tree State Natural Area

Open to hunting same as Obion River WMA. 

Hunting is prohibited within 100 yards of the RIVER TRAIL BOARDWALK and RIVER TRAIL. 

All Hunting is with shotgun, muzzleloader, rimfire, and archery only. 

Recovery of big game on RIVER TRAIL BOARDWALK is prohibited

Maness Swamp Hunting Unit

North of State Hwy. 445, bordered by the South Fork and Middle Fork of the Obion rivers as marked. 

Closed to all activities five (5) days before each opening of the late duck season.

All hunting other than waterfowl is prohibited during the late duck seasons.

No waterfowl hunters are permitted on Unit or Access area from two (2) hours after legal shooting hours have ended until 4 a.m. the following day during the late duck season(s).

Big Game, Small Game, and Trapping are the same as statewide seasons, except as noted below.

Gibson County portions is open to August Archery Deer Hunt

Waterfowl - Waterfowl Hunting will be allocated by computerized drawings for 3-day hunts (Friday - Sunday) and Opening weekend(s). The drawings will be held prior to the hunt. Hunting will only be allowed from designated locations. Waterfowl hunting closes at 3:00 p.m. except the last day of the waterfowl season(s) occurring in Nov. - Feb., and youth/military season(s) when hunting ends at sunset.
