Governor Appoints Local Shelby County Student to Tennessee State Board of Education

Governor Bill Lee has appointed Marc Williams, a junior at Hollis F. Price Middle College High School in Memphis-Shelby County Schools, to the Tennessee State Board of Education.

As a student member, Mr. Williams will serve a one-year term with full voting privileges on the State Board of Education. Student members participate in board meetings, weigh in on education rules and policies, and represent the perspectives of Tennessee’s more than one million public school students.

“We’re excited to welcome Marc to the State Board of Education,” said Dr. Sara Morrison, executive director of the State Board. “His record of civic leadership and his commitment to amplifying student voices make him a valuable addition to the Board’s work, and we look forward to the perspective he will bring on behalf of students across Tennessee.”

Mr. Williams brings a strong record of leadership and service to his peers locally and statewide. He currently serves as the 2026-2027 President of the Tennessee School Boards Association’s Student Congress On Policies and Education (SCOPE) and previously served as a Memphis-Shelby County Schools Student Board Member, a member of the MSCS Student Congress, and a youth representative for Shelby County Commission District 10 through the Shelby County Youth Council. He also serves as Director of Civic Engagement at Youth Minds United. He is a Fall 2025 inductee of the Memphis Alumni Chapter of Kappa League, where he was elected Secretary in May 2026, having previously served as Vice-Chair of the Programming Committee.

A native of Memphis, Mr. Williams is a 2026 recipient of the Youth Minds United Dedicated Star Award and a 2025 recipient of the Memphis Elegance Awards Impressionable Youth Award. He is pursuing dual-enrollment coursework at LeMoyne-Owen College. He holds youth leadership certifications from organizations including the United Nations, the National Association of Parliamentarians, and FEMA, and has completed 84 hours of youth leadership training.
