Rules, Policies, and Guidance

The Tennessee State Board of Education  establishes rules and policies governing all aspects of K-12 education necessary for the success of individual children, their communities and the state of Tennessee.

Rules are approved by the board and filed with the Secretary of State following review by the Attorney General, and are ultimately published in the Tennessee Administrative Register.

Policies voted on by the State Board represent a wide range of K-12 educational topics, including but not limited to school district operations, instructional standards, personnel, and charter schools.

Guidance documents represent items passed by the Board that are neither rules nor policies. Often these items provide further tools or interpretation.
