Areas of Study

Vocational training programs at  the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center (TRC) are designed to provide students with practical skill training required for employment in their chosen occupation. Students receive classroom instruction as well as hands on training. Program lengths vary depending on the program of enrollment.

Automotive Detailing Technician

The mission of the Automotive Detailing Technician Area of Study is to prepare students for a position in the automotive services industry. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to display skills applicable to this trade area such as positive work behaviors, market ready skills, punctuality, and good personal hygiene. Students will also be trained from the I-Car curriculum which includes paint correction, buffing, polishing, and refinishing of body panels. Upon completion of this curriculum, each student will have an opportunity to take the I-Car certification exam which is nationally recognized in Auto Collision and Repair shops. Potential job opportunities include Car Washes, Detail Shops, Small Car Lots, Large Dealerships, Select Body Shops, Auto Auctions, Rental Car Outlets, Vehicle Manufactures, and Trucking Companies.

Automotive Maintenance & Lubrication Technician

The mission of the Automotive Maintenance Area of Study is to prepare students for a position in the automotive services industry. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to display skills applicable to this trade area such as positive work behaviors, market ready skills, punctuality, and good personal hygiene. Students will also be trained from the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) curriculum and will have the opportunity to take the ASE certification test upon completion of this course, along with the Hoffman Four Wheel Alignment Certification.  Skills learned will be oil and filter replacement, four wheel alignments, wheel balancing services, brake service, repair tire servicing, and light engine and transmission work.   Potential job opportunities include Fast Lube Businesses, Automobile Dealerships, Rental Car Outlets, Large & Small Automobile Garages, Tire Companies, and Vehicle Manufacturers.

Business Education Technology

The Business Education Technology Area of Study will offer students an introduction to professional clerical and office opportunities.  Students will be introduced to specific office tasks, office procedures, and will gain an understanding of office skills. Upon successful completion in this area of study, students will have the opportunity to take and earn nationally recognized industry certification with Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exams via Certiport in the areas of Word 2016, Outlook 2016, Excel 2016, and PowerPoint 2016, as well as the Office Proficiency Assessment & Certification (OPAC) in five areas: clerical skills, computer skills, keyboarding/data entry, financial/record keeping, and legal/medical professional.  These credentials and certifications will prepare students for positions in a broad range of clerical and office related positions, including receptionist, office clerk, secretary, administrative assistant.

Certified Logistics Associate/Technician

The Certified Logistics Associate/Technician Area of Study is designed to prepare students with skills and knowledge for a career in the logistics work environment. Students will be prepared for employment with companies that have implemented a team-oriented design, safety principles, lean principles, supply chain logistics, and sustainable practices within the manufacturing environment. The Goal of CLA & CLT certification is to increase the competency level of logistics workers, to assist them in finding higher paying jobs, and to help employers improve their productivity and competitiveness. Upon completion of this area, students will be able to explore job opportunities in this industry, including shipping and receiving clerk, conveyor work, and quality standards examination in warehouses and manufacturing plants. Upon successful completion of the Certified Logistics Associate and Certified Logistics Technician exams, students will earn the nationally recognized certificate from MSSC.

Certified Production Technician

The Certified Production Technician area of study will offer students an introduction to Safety, Quality, Manufacturing Operations and Maintenance Awareness, as these topics relate to employment in the manufacturing industry. Upon successful completion of an assessment in all 4 areas, students can earn the nationally recognized Certified Production Technician credential. This credential will prepare students for positions in manufacturing including Production Helper, Production Technician, Machine Operator and Assembler.

Customer Care

The Customer Care Area of Study trains students to obtain a position in a variety of customer service settings and jobs. Students will learn skills including stocking, ordering, inventory, money handling and cash register, interpersonal communication, and handling customer concerns. This training will prepare students for positions in customer service, including call center representative, information clerk, customer service representative, and/or retail associate and greeter.

Entrepreneurship

The Entrepreneurship Area of Study will offer students an introduction to starting and running their own business.  Students will be introduced to terminology, the characteristics of an entrepreneur, business markets/opportunities, developing a business plan, marketing and more.  Upon completion of the Area of Study, students will be able to develop professional opportunities in small business.  This course may be taken at the same time as another Area of Study with the approval of the students Advisor and Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor

Food Service

The Food Service Area of Study will offer students an introduction to professional food service opportunities. Students will be introduced to workplace safety as well as sanitation & hygiene in a food service establishment. Upon completion in this area, students will be able to display skills applicable to this area such as safety, dining area work tasks, dishwashing (including manual dishwasher) operation, food identification, food preparation, and positive work behaviors. Upon successful completion of the ServSafe Manager exam, students will earn the nationally recognized certificate that is good for 5 years. This credential will prepare students for positions in the professional food service industry.

Manufacturing Assembly

The Manufacturing Assembly area of study is designed to prepare students with skills and knowledge for an entry-level career in manufacturing as team assembler. Students will be prepared for employment with companies that have implemented a team-oriented design, lean concepts & safety principles.

Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician Area of Study trains students to assist licensed pharmacists in providing medication, medical devices or products, and customer service to patients. Pharmacy Technicians may also perform tasks related to preparing or compounding medications, communicating with physician offices or insurance companies, and other administrative pharmaceutical duties. Jobs can be found in retail, hospitals, mail order, and specialty pharmacies. This certificate program will also assist students in preparing for the Pharmacy Technician Board Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPHT) exam. Key skills gained include insurance verification, payment processing, inventory tracking, ordering, prescription filling, quality control, medical data entry, and coding.

Power Equipment

The Power Equipment Area of Study will offer students an introduction to Power Equipment opportunities in the industry. Students will be introduced to workplace and equipment safety on the Forklift, Stock Picker, and Power Pallet Jack. Upon successful completion of the certification exam, students will obtain OSHA Forklift Certification.  Upon completion of the Area of Study, students will be able to explore job opportunities in this industry including warehouses, lumber yards, manufacturing plants, farm supply stores, and food outlets.

Once it has been established that a client would benefit from services provided by the vocational training unit, the local rehabilitation counselor will submit an application for services along with referral information to the TRC Admissions office.
