Registration and Notification with TDEC's Hazardous Waste Program

Get started with the process of hazardous waste activity notification in Tennessee, such as  notifitications for generators, transporters, transfer facilities, etc.

Generators of hazardous waste are regulated based on the amount of hazardous waste they generate in a calendar month. Learn more about the types of notifications for hazardous waste generators on the Waste Activity Audit  Section webpage. Only permitted transporters may pick up or drop off hazardous waste. Specific requirements must be followed by the generator of the waste and the receiving facility. More information about hazardous waste and used oil transportation can be viewed on the Hazardous Waste Transportation webpage.

Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities that currently or plan to treat, store, or dispose of hazardous wastes must obtain a RCRA permit. A RCRA permit is a legally binding document that established operating requirements and various provisions specific to the needs of the permit applicant depending on the treatment, storage, or disposal activities conducted at the facility. Tennessee has detailed regulations to ensure that TSDFs operate safely and protect human health and the environment. 

Hazardous Waste small and large quantity generators in Tennessee are required by regulation to file annual hazardous waste reports with the Division of Waste Management (DSWM). Both Small and Large Quantity Generators pay associated fees to DSWM and may own a fee to the Division of Remediation. 

Waste generators are responsible for the complete and accurate evaluation of generated waste streams. TN Rule 0400-12-01-.03(1)(b) require that a person who generates a solid waste must determine if that waste is a hazardous waste. The Division of Solid Waste Management (DSMW) hosts a virtual Hazardous Waste Annual Report Workshop at the beginning of each year, before the March 1 reporting deadline. The workshop covers how to complete and submit a hazardous waste annual report for generators.
