Building Construction Failures

Overview: This course provides firefighters and fire service personnel with an understanding of how modern building construction systems can influence fire behavior, structural stability, the potential for catastrophic collapse and how this affects fire operations. Emphasis is placed on lightweight and engineered construction, early recognition of structural degradation, roof and truss failure modes, and the added tactical effects of photovoltaic (PV) systems. This course focuses on recognizing size-up indicators and limitations associated with collapse prediction while emphasizing the importance of early identification of structural compromise and changing fire conditions as well as examining how reduced structural mass and changes in construction methods can shorten the time between fire involvement and loss of load-carrying capacity. In addition, this course also addresses the growing presence of rooftop photovoltaic systems including their impact on firefighter access, electrical hazards, ventilation operations and structural loading considerations.
