FF288 Leadership: Are You Ready for the Future?
Leadership: Are You Ready for the Future?
Overview: In today’s constantly evolving Fire and Emergency Services world the leader must persistently work toward improvement of
themselves and their subordinates. The leader should understand “Why” they want to lead and why the organization exist. There are many traits present in the effective leader that we will identify. The leader should be always working to perfect these soft skills, such as communication, effective listening, fair and consistent discipline, delegation, and more. Students will discuss the types of leadership and be able to select the correct style for each situation. Leaders should be aware of the ethical issues that they will face and how to properly
navigate them. The Center for Professional Service Excellence has identified several new issues facing fire service leaders in the 21st Century. Leaders need to be prepared to discuss and react to such topics as new technology, inclusiveness, fire department culture, robust use of data, health and wellness, partnerships, re-identification, and sustainability. We will discuss common barriers to effective leadership. We will explore the United States Coast Guard model for selecting and being a good mentor. We will discuss “Pride & Ownership” in our departments, our service to the public, and our employees. We will determine resources at the local, state, and federal levels to improve our skills to become “Leaders of the Future.”
