Keeping Youth Off Drugs and Alcohol

What:  This prevention program uses small group activities to help young people to recognize and resist media influences and peer pressures to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.

Who:  Young people from the age of six to fifteen and their parents who regularly participate in the Boys and Girls Club in the following counties: Knox, Blount, Loudon, Anderson, Scott, and Fentress.

Goal:  To prevent or delay the onset of alcohol and other drug use by young people.

Services:  The following strategies are used to try to accomplish this goal:

  • Increasing participants’ knowledge about the harmful consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
  • Helping parents to better communicate with their children about the harmful consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
  • Teaching young people better social skills in the following six target areas:
  1. How to improve communication
  2. How to problem solve
  3. How to set better goals
  4. How to choose positive adult role models
  5. How to use free time in a positive way
  6. How to choose positive friendships

Requirements: This service is offered in the following counties: Knox, Blount, Loudon, Anderson, Scott, and Fentress.
