The Tennessee Department of Correction houses more than 19,000 inmates at 14 prisons. Refer to Policy 507.02 - Inmate Mail for guidelines/restrictions on mail content.

Privileged mail (correspondence from attorneys, court clerks, legal aid clinics, governmental officials or agencies, etc.) will not be affected and should continue to be sent to the facility where the inmate is incarcerated. Privileged mail sent to the scanning facility will be forwarded to the facility. Outgoing inmate mail will not be affected.

To send mail to an inmate, you will need to know the inmate's committed name and TDOC identification number. To get this information, simply follow the steps listed below:

Step 1

If you do not already know the inmate's TDOC identification number and/or the name of the prison, click on FOIL - Inmate Search. You will need the inmate's name and possibly a date of birth, if it is a common name.

Step 2

Once you have found the correct inmate, you will need to write down the TDOC identification number. Click on "location" to get the name of the prison.

Examples:

RMSI - Riverbend Maximum Security Institution
MCCX - Morgan County Correctional Complex

Mail for the inmates at the Women's Therapeutic Residential Center will need to be addressed to the West Tennessee State Penitentiary.

Step 3

Address the envelope with the inmate's committed name, TDOC identification number and the address provided below. Aliases may be included when such have been legally changed through the court.

All envelopes must contain a return name and address.

TDOC ID #
