State Route 136

Putnam County
Putnam SR 136

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is constructing improvements on South Jefferson Avenue (State Route 136) in Putnam County. This 2.3-mile project extends from north of the State Route 111 interchange to south of the Interstate 40 interchange. Improvements include widening the 2-lane roadway to 5 lanes (2 travel lanes in each direction with a dedicated center turn lane) and the addition of a 4-foot shoulder in both directions. Drivers will also benefit from improved drainage systems, streetlights, traffic signals, sidewalks, and curb-and-gutter throughout.

Current Status: The contractor has entered Phase 2 of the project and grading and storm drainage activities are ongoing. Proposed electric, gas, and communications utilities have been relocated outside of the proposed roadway, while minor water and sewer work remain to be relocated on the north end of the project. The contractor has completed several box culverts as part of the improvements, and preliminary work has started on the last remaining box culvert near the south end of the project.

Construction start: December 2021

Estimated completion*: December 2025

Funding Type: 80% Federal / 20% State Funding

Traffic Impacts

Pigeon Roost Creek Road has been reopened to traffic, but West Davis Road has been temporarily closed with detour signs instructing motorists to utilize Bunker Hill Road and Pigeon Roost Creek Road. Henley Drive has also been temporarily closed, and a detour is in place to utilize Bunker Hill Road.  Temporary lane closures, periodic traffic stoppages, detours, and lane shifts are necessary for construction activities. Motorists are encouraged to use caution while traveling through the work zone and be aware of construction personnel.
