State Route 136

Putnam County
PUTNAM

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is constructing improvements on State Route 136 in Putnam County. This 2.3-mile project extends from north of the State Route 111 interchange to south of the Interstate 40 interchange. Improvements include widening the 2-lane roadway to 5 lanes (2 travel lanes in each direction with a dedicated center turn lane) and the addition of a 4-foot shoulder in both directions. Drivers will also benefit from improved drainage systems, streetlights, traffic signals, sidewalks, and curb-and-gutter throughout.

Current Status: The contractor continues Phase 1 grading activities throughout the project. Proposed utilities including water, gas, sewer, electric, and communications are also being relocated outside the proposed roadway throughout the project. The contractor is also continuing work on several box culverts as part of the improvements and is currently installing the new storm drainage network on Phase 1 of the work.

Estimated construction start: December 2021

Estimated completion*: February 2025

Funding Type: 80% Federal / 20% State Funding

Traffic Impacts

Pigeon Roost Creek Road and Messenger Road are closed at the intersection of SR 136, with detour signs instructing motorists to utilize Bunker Hill Road. Temporary lane closures, periodic traffic stoppages, detours, and lane shifts are necessary for construction activities. Motorists are encouraged to use caution while traveling through the work zone and be aware of construction personnel

Key Project Milestones

Contractor continues work on Phase 1 improvements, which primarily will involve construction of the new travel lanes on the west side of SR 136 (Jefferson Avenue).  As work progresses, the contractor will move traffic to the newly constructed Phase 1 side and begin work on Phase 2, which will be on the existing lanes of SR 136 and to the east.  Side roads connecting to SR 136 will be built as work progresses to allow them to tie to the new construction.
