State Route 136

Putnam County

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is constructing improvements on South Jefferson Avenue (State Route 136) in Putnam County. This 2.3-mile project extends from north of the State Route 111 interchange to south of the Interstate 40 interchange. Improvements include widening the 2-lane roadway to 5 lanes (2 travel lanes in each direction with a dedicated center turn lane) and the addition of a 4-foot shoulder in both directions. Drivers will also benefit from improved drainage systems, streetlights, traffic signals, sidewalks, and curb-and-gutter throughout.

Current Status: The contractor has completed all grading, drainage, and paving work from Williams Enterprise Drive to
SR-111. The roadway is now open to its permanent alignment, which is two lanes in each direction and a center turning lane. In addition, all street lighting has been installed and pedestrian facilities, including crosswalks, are active. The contractor will continue miscellaneous work throughout the project limits in the coming weeks.

Traffic Impacts

All lanes of traffic are now open and operational, and all side roads have been opened. As miscellaneous work continues, temporary lane closures or periodic traffic stoppages will be necessary throughout the project limits. Motorists are encouraged to use caution while traveling through the work zone and be aware of construction personnel.

Environment

Streams on the project have been relocated and stabilized according to the project plans and environmental permits. Work is occurring throughout the project on applying final stabilization, including sod and permanent seeding, to any disturbed areas.

Key Project Milestones

As work continues through the summer, the contractor is focusing efforts on the north end of the project near I-40. Work on a concrete median island is scheduled to be completed by the end of July, and the remaining paving is scheduled for the first week of August. In addition, permanent signs and pavement markings are also scheduled for the first week of August.
