State Route 136
Putnam CountyThe Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is constructing improvements on South Jefferson Avenue (State Route 136) in Putnam County. This 2.3-mile project extends from north of the State Route 111 interchange to south of the Interstate 40 interchange. Improvements include widening the 2-lane roadway to 5 lanes (2 travel lanes in each direction with a dedicated center turn lane) and the addition of a 4-foot shoulder in both directions. Drivers will also benefit from improved drainage systems, streetlights, traffic signals, sidewalks, and curb-and-gutter throughout.
Current Status: The contractor continues Phase 1 grading activities throughout the project. Proposed utilities including water, gas, sewer, electric, and communications are also being relocated outside the proposed roadway throughout the project. The contractor is also continuing work on several box culverts as part of the improvements and is currently installing the new storm drainage network on Phase 1 of the work.
Construction start: December 2021
Estimated completion*: November 2025

Key Project Milestones
Contractor continues work on Phase 1 and Phase 2 improvements throughout the project. As work progresses in Phase 1 areas, the contractor will move traffic to the newly constructed Phase 1 side and begin work on Phase 2, which will be on the existing lanes of SR 136 and to the east. Side roads connecting to SR 136 will be built as work progresses to allow them to tie to the new construction.
