Putnam I-40 at SR 136

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) plans to construct improvements to the Interstate 40 Interchange at State Route 136. The project will consist of intersection and operational improvements on SR 136 (Exit 287) to improve congestion and traffic operations between Bunker Hill Road and Interstate Drive.

Current Status: TDOT has completed traffic counts which will be analyzed with safety history to identify project needs and develop a detailed concept report. Preliminary Engineering is underway. 

A pre-submittal meeting for consultants was held on March 20th, 2026, at TDOT Region 2 and contracting is underway. The presentation is linked here. 

Estimated construction start: This project is scheduled in TDOT’s 10-Year Project Plan to begin construction in Fiscal Year 2030. This has been advanced 2 years from the original planned construction in Fiscal Year 2032.

Estimated completion*: TBD

Funding Type: TDOT anticipates that this project will be funded in part through the Transportation Modernization Fund.
