Program Design

Project Rural Recovery uses four mobile clinics to deliver integrated behavioral and physical health services in rural areas that are underserved and/or distressed counties by addressing transportation and infrastructure barriers for patients.  Our goal is to serve about 2,000 Tennesseans at about 4,800 clinic visits per year.  Services are free and available to individuals of all ages.

Project Rural Recovery began in 2020 with a $10 million, 5-year federal grant.  Through a competitive grant application, TDMHSAS selected McNabb Center and Buffalo Valley, Inc. to serve five counties in east Tennessee and five counties in southern middle Tennessee.  With additional funding provided in 2022 by Governor Bill Lee and the Tennessee General Assembly, TDMHSAS expanded the program with another competitive grant application choosing Ridgeview Behavioral Health Services to serve five counties in east Tennessee and Pathways Behavioral Health to serve five counties in west Tennessee.  Read more about the expansion in this news release.

Client and Staff Focus Group Results

The Project Rural Recovery team conducted focus groups in 2024 as part of the project’s overall evaluation process to help us learn moreabout the services being provided and how we can continue to improve. The purpose was to give clients and staff a place to speak openly about their experiences receiving and providing care on the mobile unit. Here's a little of what we heard:

  • Without the mobile unit, clients would not get the healthcare they need.
  • Most clients felt their visit was better than a typical doctor’s office visit because the care was more thorough and personal.
  • Small teams with thoughtfully chosen staff improve clients’ trust in healthcare and their overall experience.
  • Staff take pride in the program because of its unique service delivery and their ability to offer much needed services to underserved communities.

We have two documents from our focus group sessions: a two page synopsis and a longer full report.  Use the links below to download the files.
