HUMPHREYS COUNTY, Tenn. --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) presented its recommendations for the 2026-27 hunting and trapping seasons at the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission’s March 5-6 meeting held at Buffalo Ridge Refuge in Humphreys County.

The hunting and trapping season setting process is a year-long process, which includes biological data collection, public input, compilation, and analysis of data (3-and-5-year averages). There were no proposed changes for big game seasons, however the Commission discussed the start date of spring turkey season and are seeking public input. Calendar dates were shared for waterfowl and deer seasons. Wildlife Management Area (WMA) recommendations were presented with only a few changes across the state. Additionally, TWRA announced two flintlock heritage hunts in partnership with TN State Parks.

To hear the full discussion on each proposal, watch the meetings on TWRA’s YouTube channel. The public can provide comments on all proposals through April 2. Visit TWRA’s public notice webpage or email TWRA.huntingcomments@tn.gov to provide comments.

The Commission will vote on the 2026-27 Agency proposals at its April 16-17 meeting, to be held in Knoxville. Once approved, the regulations will become effective Aug. 1.

The Wildlife and Forestry Division provided an overview of big game harvest. Additionally, a preview of rule changes for clarification regarding rules and regulations governing hunts, permits, and drawings was provided.

Furthermore, the North Cumberland WMA OHV (off-highway vehicle) rulemaking hearing was rolled to continue at the upcoming April meeting.

The nominations of the 2026 Legacy Award and the 2026 Wally Childress TWRA R3 (Recruitment, Retention, Reactivation) Outstanding Leadership Award were announced. A formal presentation will be provided at the April Commission meeting. Quail Forever – Smoky Mountain Chapter was nominated for the 2026 Wally Childress TWRA R3 Outstanding Leadership Award, while Tom Beasley was nominated for the 2026 Legacy Award.

The Legacy Award was established in 2021 to recognize those people who demonstrate a commitment to hunting, fishing, and other outdoor lifestyles in Tennessee. The Wally Childress TWRA R3 Award is named in honor of the former commissioner who received the inaugural award last year for his efforts to introduce children and provide opportunities for many others to enjoy the outdoors.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is responsible for protecting, managing, and conserving fish and wildlife species for the benefit of Tennesseans and visitors. The Agency also maintains public safety through law enforcement and safety education on waterways.
