Project Description

The proposed improvement involves superstructure and substructure replacement of the SR-2 (US-11) Bridge over Sweetwater Creek in Monroe County, Sweetwater TN, utilizing three span continues prestressed concrete box beams with composite concrete deck slab, pier walls, abutment endwalls, wingwalls, and approach slabs. The project also includes the phased demolition of the existing structure, maintenance of traffic, the installation of curb & gutter, driveway tie-ins, the installation of stormwater systems, and concurrence with all permit requirements. There are no existing or proposed utilities that are or will be connected to the bridge. The existing overhead utilities are anticipated to be temporarily relocated outside the bridge footprint. Asbestos remediation will need to take place prior to the bridge demolition beginning. The department is considering that no bridge work shall take place before the utility relocation work has been completed.

Major Challenges

  • Phased Bridge Construction
  • Crane Placement
  • Bridge Demolition
  • Grade Changes on SR-2 & property tie-ins
  • Traffic control phasing & maintaining property access
  • Traffic volumes (AADT 14,560)
  • Construction sequencing
  • Utility relocations:
    1. Estimated relocations timeframe for the temporary electric is 130 Days. This is needed to allow for bridge construction off the start.
    2. Combined timeframe for the communication companies to relocate ( 270 Days + 150 Days)
    3. Tight footprint for all underground relocations

Questions

  1. The current plans show a three-phased construction and traffic control plan. The project is proposed to change to a two-phased construction and traffic control plan (See Bridge Layout Sheets). What would the potential timeline and cost/cost savings associated with the following scenarios:
    • Maintaining traffic in two directions during phase 1 and then maintaining traffic only in the northbound direction and detour traffic in the southbound direction during phase 2 under an A+B Construction Contract.
    • Maintaining traffic in two directions during phase 1 and going to a road closure during phase 2 under an A+B Construction Contract.
    • Moving to a single phase of construction with a full road closure with detour under an A+B Construction Contract.
  2. What would be the impact to cost and schedule to construct the bridge in three phases while maintaining traffic in both directions?
