Toxic Substances Program
The Toxic Substances Program’s objective is to prevent the release of lead-based paint, asbestos, and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) to the environment resulting in less exposure of these substances to people, reducing potential health hazards.
The Toxic Substances Program provides information regarding the requirements for obtaining individual and firm lead-based paint (LBP) certification as well as guidelines for properly conducting LBP activities.
Local education agencies must comply with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act. Search our database of accredited firms and professionals.
Electrical utilities, industries, scrap metal facilities, and other businesses must follow strict rules to use, store, dispose of, and manage PCB containing equipment.
Anyone engaged in lead-based paint (LBP) activities in "target housing" and "child-occupied facilities" must be certified.
Anyone applying for initial lead-based paint certification must take the state’s third-party examination within six months of completing their initial training course.
Anyone who performs asbestos activities in schools or public and commercial buildings must be accredited by the State.
The TN Secretary of State's website hosts the effective rules for the asbestos and lead paint programs, while the PCB program is governed by the Federal CFR.
