Service-Learning

Service-learning is a form of experiential learning where students develop knowledge and critical thinking skills while addressing genuine community needs. The Service-Learning course is designed to provide a comprehensive service-learning approach focused on ethical, social and intellectual skill development. Teachers must take the state-offered Service-Learning training to teach this course. Mastering the standards in this course will enable students to develop personal integrity based on positive values; to learn respect and responsibility; and to learn citizenship in schools, and community. The most effective way of learning these skills is in context, placing learning objectives within a real environment.

Service-Learning (C25H15) Course Standards and Training

New Service-Learning (SL) course standards were implemented during the 2016-17 school year. Starting this fall, Service-Learning certification training is required for all teachers who oversee the Service-Learning (C25H15) course, including those who have previously completed an in-person Service-Learning certification training.

Service-Learning certification training will be offered exclusively on the department’s self-paced, online learning management system. The newly designed online training module allows participants to better understand the Service-Learning course standards, effective Service-Learning practices, and the Service-Learning course requirements.

To register for Service-Learning certification training, participants must possess a valid TN Educator License with any secondary endorsement to oversee this course for credit.
