In 2000, the Tennessee General Assembly took a bold step by passing Tenn. Code Ann. §§ 49-1-1001 through -1008, better known as the Coordinated School Health Improvement Act, as a pilot in ten Local Education Agencies (LEAs) with the primary mission to improve student health outcomes by connecting health and wellbeing to academics.

A model developed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in 1988 identified eight interconnected components – health education, health services, nutrition, physical education/physical activity, healthy school environment, school counseling, psychological and social services, student, family, and community involvement, and staff wellness, which served as a roadmap connecting health and wellbeing to academics.

In 2006, the Tennessee General Assembly passed Public Chapter 1001, expanding Coordinated School Health statewide as well as the creation of a Physical Education (P.E.) specialist and a Coordinated of School Health position within the Tennessee Department of Education.

Today, Tennessee leads the nation as the only state to implement the Coordinated School Health model in every public school district, empowering over a million students annually to overcome barriers, achieve academic success, and embrace lifelong wellness.
