The Policy and Legislative Affairs team at the Department of Education is recruiting a new addition to their team. The ideal candidate will have experience in at least one of the following areas: education policy research, government affairs, or political campaigns. Experience working in public education is a plus.

The Policy and Legislative Affairs (PLA) team works with the Commissioner to amplify and advocate for the Department’s policy and legislative strategy in order to secure alignment on issues related to K-12 education, coordinates all legislative activity for the Department, and serves as a resource for the General Assembly, elected officials and strategic partners across the state.

General duties assigned to this team include:

§  Advising the Commissioner and leadership on legislative policy areas.

The anticipated salary range will commensurate with experience, but will not exceed an annual salary of $95,000. In addition, a comprehensive benefits package is included.

General Description:

The role of the State School Media & Communications Specialist for the TN School for the Blind is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing all communication strategies and initiatives that promote the school’s mission, programs, and achievements. The specialist serves as the primary point of contact for communication-related matters, fostering relationships with students, parents, staff, and external stakeholders. The role requires a strong commitment to accessibility and an understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·       Develop and execute a comprehensive communication plan that aligns with the school’s objectives and priorities.

·       Utilize various platforms (website, social media, newsletters, etc.) to ensure consistent messaging and engagement with audiences.

·       Create, edit, and manage high-quality content for newsletters, press releases, social media posts, and the school website.

·       Ensure all materials are accessible and inclusive, following best practices in accessibility for individuals with visual impairments.

·       Build and maintain relationships with students, parents, alumni, staff, and the wider community.

·       Coordinate events and activities that enhance engagement and awareness of the school’s mission and programs.

·       Develop and nurture relationships with local media outlets to promote school achievements and events.

·       Provide training and support to staff on effective communication practices, particularly regarding accessibility and inclusivity.

·       Assist in developing resources and materials that support students and their families in navigating school programs and services.

·       Track and analyze the effectiveness of communication efforts through metrics and feedback.

·       Adjust strategies as required to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with the school’s goals.

·       Develop and implement communication plans for crisis situations, ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination to all stakeholders.

Position Summary:

The Sr. Coordinator of Military Readiness plays a strategic leadership role within the Division of Postsecondary, Workforce, CTE, and Military Readiness, advancing the Tennessee Department of Education’s vision to ensure that every student graduates with a clear path to success—whether through postsecondary education, the workforce, or military service. This position leads the development and implementation of policies, training, and systems that elevate military readiness as a key pillar of high school transformation. The director will establish and strengthen relationships with military recruiting and retention leaders, university ROTC programs, and national military academies to ensure accurate and timely information is available to local education agencies (LEAs).

This individual will guide districts and schools in identifying how existing programs of study align with military career pathways and how students can meet requirements for enlistment or advancement in military-affiliated postsecondary programs. Additionally, the director will lead the development of tools, resources, and professional learning to increase educator and counselor awareness of military options, ultimately improving statewide tracking and reporting of student military preparation and outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:  Possession of a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university and experience equivalent to four years of full-time professional educational, instructional or supervisory/administrative work.
  • Substitution of Graduate Education for Experience: Graduate coursework from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of two years. 

OR

  • One year of experience as an Education Consultant 1, School Nutrition Consultant, or Child Care Program Evaluator 2 with the State of Tennessee.

  • Communication and Reporting
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the department and military branches to ensure accurate, up-to-date communication about military enlistment, ROTC, and academy pathways.
  • Increase transparency around military preparation and outcomes by developing and implementing a data collection and reporting system to accurately capture the number of Tennessee students preparing for and entering military service.
  • Collaborate with data and accountability teams to integrate military readiness into existing metrics and dashboards.
  • Create and disseminate clear, user-friendly materials and guidance to support district and school implementation of military readiness pathways.
  • Coordination and Teamwork
  • Coordinate with CTE Senior Coordinators to ensure military-aligned career pathways are clearly mapped to relevant programs of study, and support LEAs in integrating these pathways into school-level offerings.
  • Partner with the Senior Director of CTE to design and implement immersive experiences for CTE directors, school counselors, career coaches, and school leaders, such as site visits to military training centers, professional development sessions led by military representatives, and cross-sector panels.
  • Collaborate with school counselors and career coaches to embed military options into individualized student advising models and postsecondary planning frameworks.
  • Support cross-agency collaboration with the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Tennessee Higher Education Commission, and Veterans Affairs to align postsecondary and workforce goals with military readiness priorities.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that values military service as a critical pathway to student success.

Work Environment

The duties will primarily be carried out indoors, in environmentally controlled conditions. The employee will be required to perform general physical abilities and handle and move objects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Purchases all supplies, equipment, and services for the school by preparing requisitions, purchase orders, and receipts. Screens all requisitions and purchases orders for accuracy and proper justification and approvals.
  • Enters and maintains Agency Term Contracts when required by the Central Procurement Office, writes product specifications for use in bidding competitively with vendors for supplies, equipment, and services. Serves as a liaison between the agency, Central Procurement Office, and vendors for procuring and/or amending contracts.
  • Assists Business Manager to keep policies and procedures updated as required.
