Issues During Certification

Where's My Money?

After a successful certification, benefit payments may take up to 3 business days.
For example: If you certified Tuesday, pending approval, you will receive your benefit payment on Friday.

Failure to Report Earnings

Earnings must be reported during weekly certification. Wages are reportable the week in which they are earned, regardless of when they are paid.

Starting Too Late

It is imperative you complete certification for each week you are unemployed. You will not receive benefits for the week if you did not fulfill the requirement. If you miss a week, the system will allow you to post-date your certification.

Stopping Too Late...Now You Owe Us Back.

When you go back to work, you report your new earnings during certification which will stop your claim( or simply stop certifying).  Earnings are reportable when you actually work, not when you are paid. An example would be if you worked eight hours Monday at 10 dollars an hour. When you certify Sunday, you must report 80 dollars even though you won’t get actually receive the paycheck for that earned money until later.

If you receive a benefit and unreported wages at the same time, the department will request a refund. This is called an overpayment. If not paid back promptly, the balance can be deducted from your tax return, or taken from future unemployment benefits.

Disqualified Certifications

Perhaps you've received messaging that your weekly certification has been disqualified, raising concern as you've previously certified with no interruptions. As we've migrated to our new system, a few instances have been identified as possible issues. Please reach out to us for review of your individual case.

Answering Questions Incorrectly

Certification questions are a weekly verification that you are eligible for unemployment so certain answers can stop your benefit immediately. While the system asks to verify that an answer is correct, claimants often rush the process and interrupt their benefits by mistake. It may be helpful to review the questions, and understand what each is asking before certifying for the first time.
