Old Hickory WMA Staff Inspires Next Generation at DU Green Wings Event
Annual Event Helps Introduce Next Generation to Hunting, Conservation, and Tennessee's Rich Outdoor HeritageThe staff at Old Hickory Wildlife Management Area (WMA) recently hosted the Annual Wilson County Ducks Unlimited Green Wings Event, welcoming more than 60 young hunters and their families for a day of outdoor education and hands-on activities. Participants had the opportunity to enjoy archery, pellet rifle shooting, casting, and exciting duck dog demonstrations showcasing retrieves on both land and water. TWRA staff Erick Nie and Noah Cartwright led the pellet rifle station, while Barry Cross oversaw the archery activities, helping young participants build their outdoor skills in a safe and encouraging environment.
One of the day's biggest highlights came when Old Hickory WMA Manager Michael Bobel demonstrated a rocket net deployment. The loud boom captured everyone's attention as he explained how wildlife biologists use rocket nets to safely capture and study wildlife for conservation and management purposes. The annual Green Wings Event continues to be a family-friendly tradition, offering great food, prizes, and countless opportunities to learn. Thanks to the dedication of the Old Hickory WMA staff, Ducks Unlimited volunteers, and TWRA employees, the event helps introduce the next generation to hunting, conservation, and Tennessee's rich outdoor heritage.
