TWRA Joins Celebration of Arnold Air Force Base’s 75th Anniversary

TWRA personnel joined thousands of visitors at the Arnold Air Force Base (AAFB) open house recently as the installation celebrated its 75th anniversary. TWRA staff members Mark Winland, Wes Winton, Chad Harden, Andy Lively, and Scott Hathorne welcomed attendees, answered questions about Tennessee’s fish and wildlife, and highlighted the many hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation opportunities available throughout the region. Formally dedicated in 1951 and named in honor of General of the Air Force Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, Arnold Air Force Base is home to the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), the world’s most advanced aerospace ground test and flight simulation facility. The installation is also home to the AEDC Wildlife Management Area, which was established through a cooperative agreement in 1953 between the U.S. Air Force and the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission. The partnership was created to conserve the area’s natural resources while providing quality outdoor recreation opportunities for the public.

More than 70 years later, that partnership continues through the TWRA. The AEDC Wildlife Management Area encompasses approximately 32,000 acres of oak-hickory hardwood forests, open pine savannas, and scattered grasslands. Along with Woods Reservoir, the area offers exceptional opportunities for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation, a lasting example of the successful partnership between Arnold Air Force Base and TWRA.
