Wayne County Youth Squirrel Hunt Reaches 10-Year Milestone
The Ashtin Grimes Youth Squirrel Hunt in Wayne County marked a major milestone this year, celebrating its 10th year of bringing young hunters together for a day in the woods. What began with just over 20 participants has grown into a highly anticipated annual event, now drawing more than 140 youth from across the region.
Brandon Taylor, Wayne County wildlife officer, says the focus has always been clear. “It’s all about the kids,” Taylor said. “We get them here, feed them breakfast, and send groups out with a dog handler for the hunt. Everyone meets back here for lunch, and we give away a bunch of prizes. It’s just good to see those kids having fun and walking away with a good feeling about hunting.”
The morning hunt proved successful, with young participants following seasoned dog handlers through the woods, many harvesting their very first squirrel. After the hunt, families gathered for a barbecue lunch and prize giveaways that included more than 50 firearms, several custom knives, two $500 scholarships, and numerous other items.
Taylor is quick to credit the community for the event’s continued success. “We couldn’t do this without the support of local sponsors and landowners who give so generously. The Wayne County community is the best. They know when the hunt is and they want to support the hunt and the kids who participate.”
Ten years in and the Ashtin Grimes Youth Squirrel Hunt stands as more than just a day of hunting. It’s a testament to investing in the next generation of outdoorsmen and women.
