The TWRA Biodiversity Division recently hosted the State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) Steering Committee at the Ed Jones Auditorium (The Barn). Representatives from more than 20 agencies, conservation groups, and research institutions from across the state were represented.

The SWAP Steering Committee is intended to provide a forum for partners to share their expertise during the SWAP revision as well as to increase inter-organizational implementation of the plan. The plan, mandated by Congress, outlines steps to conserve species before they become endangered or too costly to restore. The plan must be updated every 10 years, and the revision is due in September to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

All 50 states are required to submit a plan to obtain their state wildlife grant programs. Tennessee’s SWAP is a collaborative, living guide, intended for use by all Tennesseans to conserve, protect, and manage wildlife, fish, and plant Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and the ecological communities they need to survive.
