On Monday, Sept. 29, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO), a division of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, joined the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police (TACP) at Nashville Auto-Diesel College (NADC) for a “Seat Belts Save Lives” event to showcase the THSO’s four new seat belt convincers purchased through THSO grant funds to be utilized for community outreach. The THSO will now have eight seat belt convincers to utilize statewide, expanding opportunities for traffic safety education.

As Child Passenger Safety Week is recognized nationwide this week, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is reminding families that car seats save lives. New crash data from the department shows toddlers under age 4 are 85 percent more likely to die or suffer serious injury in a crash if they are not properly restrained.

Each September, Donate Life Tennessee celebrates National Driver Services Center Appreciation Month, an observance recognizing the incredible collaboration between Donate Life Tennessee and the Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s Driver Services Centers (DSC) across the state.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDSHS) has been recognized with two international awards and multiple regional honors in the 2025 American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) Awards Program. The recognition places Tennessee among the top public safety agencies across North America for innovation, service, and professionalism.

Today at the 2025 “Three Stars of Tennessee Award” ceremony, Governor Bill Lee and State Senator Becky Duncan Massey joined Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long and Deputy Commissioner Greg Mays to honor and remember five first responders who died or suffered a career-ending injury in the line of duty.

On Thursday, August 28, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO), a division of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS), announced $33.5 million in federal grant funds to be distributed statewide from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the 2025–2026 federal fiscal year.

As another school year gets underway, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security is reminding students, faculty, parents and the public about their SafeTN app and announcing additional ways Tennesseans can report threats directly to the Office of Homeland Security Threat Assessment Center.

On August 14, Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Colonel Matt Perry welcomed the newest graduating classes of Tennessee State Troopers. Lateral Trooper Cadet Class 825 completed a rigorous 11-week training. Commissioner Long served as the keynote speaker during the graduation ceremony and delivered the oath of office as the graduating class was sworn in. The graduation ceremony was held at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville.

Today, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) announced award recipients from its 37th Annual Tennessee Lifesavers Conference and 21st Annual Law Enforcement Challenge held Aug. 6 – 8, 2025. Agencies and individuals were recognized for excelling in child passenger safety, drug recognition, teen driver safety, traffic enforcement, and more.

As students return to classrooms across the Volunteer State, the Tennessee Highway Patrol is reminding families that school safety is not limited to the first week of class. Troopers are working year-round to protect students both on the road and on school campuses.

The Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s Nashville/Hickory Hollow Driver Services Center, 5216 Hickory Hollow Pkwy, is moving to a new location, 2450 Morris Gentry Blvd, Antioch, TN.

Drivers who feel the need for speed better hit the brakes or be ready to see blue lights in their rear-view mirror during Operation Southern Slow Down. From July 14 to July 20, this speed enforcement campaign returns in five southeastern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. To kick off the campaign, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO), a division of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, held press events in Franklin, Collierville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Kingsport to remind drivers to slow down.

The Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s Dickson Driver Services Center, 114 West Christi Drive, will close for a planned remodel on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

The Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced the opening of the 2025-2026 Houses of Worship Security Grant to fund contract security personnel for eligible 501(c)(3) organizations which serve as houses of worship including churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques.
