Centralized Immigration Enforcement Division (CIED)

Protecting Tennessee: A Comprehensive Approach to Immigration Enforcement
The Centralized Immigration Enforcement Division (CIED) within the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security is responsible for overseeing state and local collaboration with federal immigration authorities to ensure effective and efficient communication, resource allocation and enforcement of established immigration laws.
The CIED was established by the Tennessee General Assembly in 2025 with passage of SB6002/HB6001.

Mission Statement
Created in 2025, the CIED supports federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in Tennessee by:
- Overseeing state and local collaboration with federal immigration agencies
- Facilitating effective communication with respect to immigration policy and enforcement
- Coordinating state and local participation in federal immigration programs, including 287(g) agreements
- Approving and distributing grant funds to local law enforcement from the immigration enforcement grant program
- Establishing a whole-of-state-government approach to immigration enforcement
What is 287(g)?
A voluntary partnership between state and local law enforcement and federal immigration agencies which allows designated officers to perform limited immigration functions under the supervision of federal immigration authorities. These agreements promote more efficient identification of removable criminal aliens in jails and prisons, reduce state and local detention costs, and ultimately strengthen public safety by removing violent criminals from Tennessee communities.
