Over 750 Soldiers and Airmen with the Tennessee National Guard are part of a 25,000 member National Guard task force supporting the 59th Presidential Inauguration and assisting with security for the U.S. Capitol and other Federal properties in Washington, D.C.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 2020 has been a turbulent yet historic year for the Soldiers and Airmen of the Tennessee National Guard and Tennessee State Guard, one that personified their time-honored volunteer tradition. Thousands of Guardsmen have volunteered to serve the State of Tennessee – something not seen since the early stages of the Global War on Terror.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Maj. Gen. Jeff Holmes, Tennessee’s Adjutant General, announced today that Brig. Gen. (Tenn.) Juan R. Santiago, from Memphis, is to become the new commander of the Tennessee State Guard.
The National Guard celebrates its 384th birthday on Dec. 13, 2020. This date is etched on the cornerstone of our Nation as it represents the first moment our society took its defense into our own hands. It was also the first step in building a nation out of an untamed and dangerous wilderness. This date signifies the moment the Massachusetts Bay Colony organized three militia regiments to defend the colony from the growing threat of American Indian attacks. Other American colonies would follow their example and the militia would later become the basis for the Continental Army. The organized militia has since become the oldest military branch and the only military force required by our constitution.

The most pivotal of them all has been COVID-19, and for one Tennessee National Guardsman, it’s a battle that serves great purpose.
KEY WEST, Fla. – Staff Sgt. Aaron McDermott, assigned to Alpha Company, Recruiting and Retention Battalion for the Tennessee National Guard, was awarded the Southeast Recruiting and Retention NCO of the Year, after competing against recruiters from nine different states and territories, Nov. 20.
LOUISVILLE, Tenn. – Approximately 25 Soldiers assigned to the Tennessee National Guard’s Detachment 1, Company C, 2-135th Aviation Regiment from Louisville are scheduled to return home Nov. 13 and 14, after a successful 10-month deployment to Kosovo.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee National Guard reached a milestone this week in COVID-19 testing. Since the start of the pandemic, Soldiers and Airmen have administered over 500,000 COVID-19 tests to citizens throughout Tennessee.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A Tennessee Army National Guard flight crew responded to an emergency air evacuation mission after a hiker suffered injuries in the Pisgah National Forest area, North Carolina, Oct. 28.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Since March, the Tennessee National Guard has been working diligently alongside Tennessee’s Department of Health, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, and various other state and local agencies to successfully administer COVID-19 tests to fellow Tennesseans. By Oct. 8, Tennessee guardsmen have successfully tested over 400,000 of their fellow citizens.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nearly 60 Soldiers assigned to the Tennessee National Guard’s 168th Military Police Battalion in Dyersburg returned home Saturday, Sept. 26, after a 10-month deployment to the Middle East.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee National Guard’s 1129th Finance Management Support Detachment in Nashville will be leaving this weekend for a 10-month deployment in the U.S. European Command area of operations in support of Operation Joint Guardian.

SMYRNA, Tenn. – Approximately 116 Soldiers from the Tennessee National Guard’s 194th Engineer Brigade has returned home after a successful deployment to the Middle East. Before returning to Tennessee, the Soldiers conducted a two-week quarantine period and a de-mobilization process in Fort Bliss, Texas.
