TANF Opportunity Act Data Dashboard

The TANF Opportunity Act (TOA) was signed into law in 2021, which included the creation of the Tennessee Opportunity Pilot Initiative (TOPI). The TOPI funded seven $25 million competitive grants to nonprofits across the state. The programs aim to improve the economic mobility and self-sufficiency of eligible families throughout Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Human Services contracted with MEF Associates to conduct randomized control trials for each pilot to better evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the interventions.

This data dashboard, created by the Urban Institute, supplements the ongoing evaluation and describes the circumstances of all Tennessee families and children throughout the pilot programs’ implementation. The dashboard includes demographic information, income measures and poverty rates, employment and education data, safety net program caseloads, and health information. Each measure can be compared across counties and grand divisions, across subgroups of Tennessee individuals and families, and/or over time.

The data displayed here are presented at the state and national level. Data is also included at the grand division and county level when available. The data documentation and sources can be found here.
