The Mine Safety Unit provides health and safety training classes for mine workers, issues mine foreman certifications, and licenses coal/metal mines (surface and underground) to operate. The safety classes are conducted by highly accredited instructors who provide new miner training, refresher training, and first aid classes that meet electrical, foreman, and compliance requirements.

Inside the Mine Safety Unit
Mine safety training is mandated by state/federal government and requires all miners and contractors working on mine property to receive comprehensive safety training. Miners are required to provide the department statistical information annually.
Certain mines in Tennessee are required to procure a license to operate. The owner or operator of each mine shall procure from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development a license to operate a mine. Visit this page to start the application process.
Currently in Tennessee, persons seeking the certificate of competency must apply and successfully pass an exam to become certified as a mine foreman. Visit this page to learn more and to choose the appropriate application for the certificate of competency.
As per Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations and Tennessee Code Annotated, all underground mines throughout Tennessee are required to provide their own mine rescue coverage before they are allowed to operate.
To report a mine safety accident, inform the Mine Safety Unit of the accident and record the data.
