Maness Swamp Refuge

Site Directions: From Kenton, follow highway 89 east and follow signs to Greenfield and Big Cypress State Natural Area.

Highway 89 is well paved, has several sharp bends, and transitions to Highway 445; however, follow the signs to Big Cypress State Natural Area and you will pass the entrance to Maness Swamp WMA.

Seasonality:  The refuge is open to foot traffic only when gates are closed. The refuge is closed to all forms of use and trespass from 1 Nov – Last day in Feb.

Entrance gates will be open during hunting seasons, but may be closed without prior notice for safety and management reasons.

Closed Nov. 1 through the last day in February to all forms of use and trespass unless otherwise indicated. Designated observation areas will be open year-round.

Gibson County portion follows Unit CWD dates and bag limits beginning with August G/M/A Hunt (see Deer Seasons & Bag Limits) through Oct. 31.

Closed to fall turkey hunting.

Turkey - One non-quota turkey hunt: April 13 - May 5, 2024. Bag limit one bearded turkey, counts toward statewide bag limit.

Turkey (Young Sportsman) - Same as statewide season.

Site Description: The area is primarily agricultural fields that are flooded in winter for waterfowl.

At the south end of the access road, accessible only when the road is dry is some of the best reforestation you will find anywhere. The area is a refuge for waterfowl to rest, so there is no duck hunting. 

Wildlife to Watch: Winter waterfowl is the main draw for this site.
