The Aviation Operations Unit provides comprehensive air support to the Department of Safety & Homeland Security and to partnering state, federal, and local public safety agencies. Utilizing a modern fleet of helicopters equipped with advanced technology—including Electro‑Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensors, augmented‑reality mapping systems, searchlights, tactical radio systems, radio‑direction‑finding receivers, and microwave downlink capabilities—the unit supports a wide range of missions.

Aviation Operations conduct criminal and non‑criminal searches, hoist rescues, tactical deployments, stolen‑vehicle tracking, and vehicle‑pursuit monitoring and mitigation, as well as numerous other public‑safety operations. Crews composed of highly trained pilots and Tactical Flight Officers (TFOs) are strategically based in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson to provide rapid response and statewide coverage. All aircrew members are recruited from within the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Aviation Maintenance

The Aviation Maintenance Division provides comprehensive mechanical support for the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s helicopter fleet, ensuring each aircraft remains safe, reliable, and ready for mission deployment. Staffed by certified aviation mechanics, the division performs all facets of maintenance, including routine and scheduled inspections, airframe and engine servicing, component replacement, and detailed troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and rotor systems.

Maintenance crews conduct pre‑flight, post‑flight, and periodic inspections; service powerplants and drive systems; maintain rotor assemblies; and ensure proper operation of hoist equipment, avionics, and mission‑specific systems. The division also handles parts management, technical documentation, and adherence to all FAA maintenance requirements.By providing skilled mechanical expertise and consistent, high‑quality maintenance practices, the Aviation Maintenance Division ensures that THP aircraft remain fully operational and capable of supporting public safety missions across the state.
