We dedicate these pages to all of the Tennessee Highway Patrol members who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

Trooper Charles Hash

Shelby Country
April 11, 1930
Trooper Charles Hash was the first Tennessee Highway Patrol member to lose his life in the line of duty. Trooper Hash was injured while operating a motorcycle. He was thrown from his motorcycle after being struck by a car. He passed away 8 days later at a Memphis hospital at the age of 32.

Trooper Walter Jones lost his life while operating a motorcycle in Nashville.

Trooper Lee Lovelace

Smith County
February 3, 1934
Trooper Lee Lovelace lost his life after a motorcycle accident.

Trooper Clovis Cole

Obion County
May 2, 1934
Trooper Clovis Cole lost his life while operating a motorcycle in Union City.

Trooper Ed Kennedy

Cumberland County
August 22, 1934
Trooper Ed Kennedy lost his life in an automobile accident while traveling on Highway 70 in Crab Orchard.

Trooper Lindsey Smith

Coffee County
December 17, 1934
Trooper Lindsey Smith was shot while responding to a domestic dispute in Tullahoma. The suspect shot another responding officer from the Tullahoma Police department before fleeing to a church. A second Tullahoma officer was also shot while searching the church for the suspect, and Trooper Smith was shot twice as the suspect came around the corner of the church. All three officers lost their lives as a result of the gunshot wounds they received.

Trooper Samuel Holcomb, Jr. lost his life after being struck by a vehicle as he was making a traffic stop. Trooper Holcomb was exiting his car on I-40 in Dickson County when he was struck from behind.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division Officer Michael Rector lost his life after being shot during an undercover operation.

Trooper Douglas Tripp lost his life after being shot multiple times while sitting in his car.

Trooper George Holcomb

Decatur County
January 26, 1992
Trooper George V. Holcomb lost his life after being hit by a tractor trailer. He was on the scene of another accident when the tractor trailer lost control and struck another vehicle which in turn struck Trooper Holcomb.

Trooper John R. Davis lost his life after he lost control of his vehicle and slid into a creek.

Trooper Todd Michael Larkins

Trooper Todd M. Larkins lost his life after being struck by a tractor trailer as he was making a traffic stop. Trooper Larkins had initiated a traffic stop on I-40 and had exited his marked vehicle shortly before the crash.

Trooper Calvin W. Jenks

Trooper Calvin W. Jenks lost his life after being shot during a traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 14 and Highway 54. Trooper Jenks asked the vehicle occupants if there were drugs in the car at which time they opened fire, striking him in the head and once in the body.

Trooper Wall and Trooper Buddy Head were riding their THP motorcycles and escorting the U.S. Air Force Thunderbird pilots to an air show. A crash occurred involving three vehicles and the two state troopers.

Trooper Joe Snipes

Trooper Snipes was killed in an off-duty motorcycle accident in Bradley County. Trooper Snipes died just before 5 p.m. when he lost control of his bike on Pleasant Grove Road. His wife was also injured in the crash.

Trooper Ronnie Hale

White County
July 6, 2012
Trooper Hale died while on duty in the Cookeville District. Trooper Ronnie Hale was stationed in White County when he suffered a heart attack. Trooper Hale died while being transported to the hospital by emergency medical personnel.

Trooper Michael Slagle

Knox County
January 25, 2013
Trooper Slagle passed away from what appears to have been natural causes after he crashed on Longmeyer Road in Knox County. He was discovered unresponsive and was unable to be revived at the scene.

Sergeant Brian Boshears

Scott County
April 22, 2013
Sergeant Boshears passed away from complications of pneumonia.

Sergeant Joshua Mabe

Grainger County
June 6, 2015
Sgt. Mabe was killed in an off-duty farming accident at his home in Hancock County.
