Today, Commissioner Jeff Long of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDSOHS) and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Colonel Dereck R. Stewart announced the “Tennessee Challenge” traffic safety initiative. The “Tennessee Challenge” will increase traffic enforcement efforts on the busiest travel days of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security reminds Tennesseans that one year from today, the REAL ID Act of 2005 will go into effect. Beginning October 1, 2021, individuals seeking to enter certain federal buildings, nuclear facilities, military bases, or to board commercial flights within the United States will be required to have a REAL ID compliant license or acceptable alternative identification such as a valid United States passport or military ID to gain entry.

The addition of these services to the kiosks will provide customers another alternative to visiting a Driver Services Center or county clerk partner.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security hosted the Three Stars of Tennessee Award and First Responder Recognition Ceremony today. The Three Stars of Tennessee Award honors public servants who have sacrificed their lives or suffered a career-ending injury in the line of duty. Governor Bill Lee, First Lady Maria Lee, Commissioner Jeff Long, State Senator Becky Massey (R-Knoxville), and Greg Mays, Director of the Tennessee Office of Homeland Security joined recipients, their family members and agency representatives to honor five recipients with the “Three Stars of Tennessee Award.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol, along with various other agencies, will be patrolling the roads to ensure a safe holiday weekend. THP Labor Day enforcement will begin Friday, September 4, at 6:00 p.m. and end Tuesday, September 8, at 5:59 a.m.
