Subsurface Sewage Disposal System (SSDS) Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Septic System Permit?

A septic system permit is required for the construction, modification or repair of a septic system. This permit ensures that the septic system design complies with state regulations and safeguards your health by properly managing wastewater.

When do I need to apply for a Septic System Permit?

You need to apply for a permit when you are planning to construct a new septic system, or repair or modify an existing system. This includes residential, commercial, and industrial properties.

How do I apply for a Septic System Permit or related services?

You can apply for a septic system permit or related services through the Septic Service Request Online Application.

What happens after I apply for a Septic System Permit?

A TDEC Environmental Scientist will conduct a site evaluation to determine the type of septic system required for your property. The Environmental Scientist may request additional information, such as a detailed site plan or a soils map from a private licensed soil consultant. If a permit is issued, the applicant will provide the permit to a licensed installer. When installation is complete, the installer will contact the local Environmental Scientist to schedule a final inspection before the system is covered. If the septic system installation is approved, the Environmental Scientist will issue a Certificate of Completion.

How much does a Septic System Permit cost?

The cost of a Septic System Permit varies depending on the size and type of system that will be used. Application fees are outlined on the construction permit page.

How long does it take to process my application?

The processing time for a Septic System Permit varies, but it can take up to 45 days from receipt of a complete application. An application is deemed complete when TDEC’s Division of Water Resources has everything needed to issue a permit. This includes clearly marking the property lines and desired house location and mowing or bush hogging the site before the Environmental Scientist makes a site visit. The Environmental Scientist will advise you if additional information or soil mapping is needed after the initial site visit.

What happens if my application is denied?

If your application is denied, you will receive a notice from TDEC detailing the reasons for the denial.

What should I have prepared before a TDEC Environmental Scientist comes to my property?

Before a TDEC Environmental Scientist visits your property to conduct an evaluation, you should ensure the following:

  • Proper Access to the Site: Ensure that the proposed site for the septic system is easily accessible for the inspector. This may include sign identification from the main road.
  • Clear Demarcation of the Property Lines and House Site: Mark the property lines and corners. For long property lines, place intermediate stakes no more than two hundred (200) feet apart. Applicants will need to stake the four corners of the house/building pad, including areas for patios, porches, garages, pools, etc.
  • Vegetation: Ensure all grass and brush have been mowed or bushhogged around the house site and the proposed area(s) for the soil evaluation. Soil disturbance, cutting and filling should not take place as part of this process. Additional clearing may be required as determined by the Environmental Scientist.
  • Access to the Necessary Documentation: Provide any previous soil maps, surveys, house or site plans or additional information to the Environmental Scientist for review.
