TDOE Announces 2022-23 Governor’s Civics Seal District and School Recipients

Nearly 60 Schools and Two Districts Awarded 

Nashville, TN - Today, the Tennessee Department of Education announced the 2022-23 Tennessee Excellence in Civics Education districts and schools. A total of 59 schools and two school districts are recipients of the Governor’s Civics Seal, which recognizes schools and districts that prioritize teaching the nation’s history and civics values. “In Tennessee, schools and districts are deliberately working toward preparing students for lifelong civic engagement through the Governor's Civics Seal initiative,” said Lizzette Reynolds, Education Commissioner. "I'm proud of the commitment our districts and schools have to providing strong academic instruction so students can be productive citizens in their future workplaces and communities."

The Governor’s Civics Seal initiative is designed to promote lifelong civic engagement by providing access to high-quality civics resources, establishing civics programs in rural and urban schools and districts, and supporting highly effective educators through civics-based professional development.

“When we teach our students about our nation's government and what their role is in those processes, it allows them to see themselves as active participants and not just bystanders,” said Rebekah Reed, Social Studies Content Lead, Hamilton County Schools. “Providing our students multiple opportunities to participate in these types of activities throughout their public education career will help our students develop a sense of citizenship that will lead them to become more active participants in their communities.”

“Throughout the Alcoa City School district, we recognize that we are educating students to read, write, and think, but equally important, we are educating students who will engage as citizens in our great nation,” said Gina Feldblum, Social Studies Department Chair, Alcoa City Schools. “Alcoa students are becoming the civic leaders of tomorrow.”

“This honor reflects the collaborative efforts of our dedicated educators, passionate students, and supportive community,” said Jessica Price, Secondary Instructional Supervisor, Bartlett City Schools. “Together, we strive to empower minds, cultivate civic responsibility, and inspire a future where knowledge, participation, and excellence in civic education leads to a better society.”
