Participate in TN Breakfast Bites to Promote Healthy Eating

Nashville, TN—In celebration of National School Breakfast Week next week, March 8-12, the Tennessee Department of Education is partnering with the USDA Southeast Regional Office (SERO) to host TN Breakfast Bites to promote healthy eating during breakfast. Tennesseans of all ages are invited to join districts and schools across the state and enjoy berries for breakfast throughout the week to promote healthy eating using easily accessible produce.

“Schools play critical roles in feeding children across the state. With a nutritious school breakfast, students can start their day with a clear mind and full belly, which helps ensure they are ready to learn,” said Commissioner Penny Schwinn. “The department encourages all Tennesseans to join students and schools across the state in this fun activity by eating berries for breakfast and promoting healthy eating.”

TN Breakfast Bites encourages healthy eating of berries- including strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries- and breakfast participation from districts and schools as well as all Tennesseans. Additionally, districts and schools can connect their berry activities to classroom curriculum and extend past breakfast to promote nutrition and healthy eating practices throughout the school day.

“Knox County Schools is excited for the opportunity to highlight the importance of breakfast during National School Breakfast Week,” said Brett Foster, Executive Director of School Nutrition, Knox County Schools. “School breakfast helps fuel students, so they are ready to succeed in the classroom. There is no better way to start the school day than with a healthy, school breakfast!”

Across the country, schools will be participating in the national celebration, Score Big with School Breakfast, and highlighting the importance of nutritious school breakfasts and ensuring students start their days off with a healthy meal. On Wednesday, March 10, the USDA Southeast Regional Office (SERO) is hosting an event to highlight nutritious breakfast photos submitted from the various states participating.

In October, during Farm to School month, the department hosts Tennessee Crunch Day to promote healthy eating of locally grown apples.
