Coverage Lookup and Notification of Early Cancellation of Policy
The Tennessee Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is proud to offer the public the ability to register and receive notifications of policies that have been canceled prior to the termination date. This information is based on data from the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) and is accessible via the Verification of Coverage link. This service was developed with assistance from the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Commission.
A contractor may employ the services of many subcontractors. Under Tenn. Code Ann. § 50-6-914, holds a contractor (including general, intermediate, or subcontractors) may be held liable for work-related injuries or deaths sustained by uninsured subcontractors and their employees while performing work on the contractor’s behalf.
To mitigate the risk, many contractors require subcontractors to maintain workers’ compensation coverage to protect all parties involved. This places a significant burden on contractors to ensure that each Certificate of Insurance is current, accurate, and valid.
The Bureau’s notification service helps ease this burden by electronically generating and distributing alerts when a subcontractor’s policy is canceled. These notifications are sent to all registered users, helping to:
- Improve compliance with workers’ compensation laws
- Provide a safety net of benefits for construction workers
- Reduce the risk of fraud, and
- Support enforcement efforts.
Who Should Use This Service?
This service is valuable across a wide range of industries and professions that rely on subcontracted work and workers’ compensation compliance, including:
- Residential and commercial general contractors
- Intermediate contractors, subcontractors, and their employees
- Workers' compensation insurance providers, agents, and adjusters
- Property & Casualty insurance agents
- Landscapers and other industries that rely on subcontractors
- The Tennessee Uninsured Employer’s Fund and the Tennessee Employee Misclassification Education and Enforcement Fund
- Government agencies involved in insurance fraud enforcement, and
- Tennessee citizens, whose tax dollars support law enforcement efforts and, ultimately, pay higher premiums when the costs of fraud are passed through to consumers.
